For her prize, she went home with a laptop which was presented to her by the Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at a ceremony held recently.

The 40-day vacation reading challenge themed; “How many books can you read?” was in collaboration with Smartline Limited and aimed at inculcating the love of reading books in the youth and help them get hooked onto books.

Deliberate efforts

Speaking after the presentation of the award, Dr Bawumia said building a culture of reading among citizens, especially children, required deliberate efforts of both parents and the state.

He emphasised that the ability of children to read and write by age 10 was the surest way of closing the nation’s current learning poverty gap.

“We face a learning and human capital catastrophe without urgent action to reduce learning poverty,” he said.

Reading Interest

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Head of Academics, RisingSun Montessori school, Lashibi, Emmanuel Roos Ansah said the need for children and the youth to find interest in reading solely lied in their involvement in such competition.

“I ,therefore, urge all parents to prioritise nurturing their children to become good readers and smart kids.

This is something that at RisingSun we do not take for granted, in fact, it is one of our core mandates and top priority,” he said.

Proud moments

On how she got into the competition and how the school feels about her win, Mr Ansah noted that it had been one of their proud moments.

“The competition is about having the Ghanaian child read several books within the shortest periods and summarising it to be credited with points.

“Her mother saw the notice online and registered her after which she was given access to several eBooks,” he explained.

He said after reading the books, the girl was tasked to summarise them and based on the number of points accumulated, she was adjudged the winner.
