Philanthropist builds school block for community

A public-spirited individual, Felix Akonta Akakpo, has built a six-unit basic school for the Lente-Wute community in the Ketu South Municipality, to replace a collapsed one.

The facility was handed over to the school authorities and the community amid pomp and circumstance.

The children will attend the school for free with Mr Akakpo taking care of the salaries of the teachers in the interim. Meanwhile, plans are in place to get the government to absorb the school.

Purpose of the gesture

Mr Akakpo, who is a native of the community, said he was motivated by his strong desire to see children in the community get uninhibited access to decent education.

The philanthropist, who is a native of the Lente-Wute, recalled how he struggled to go to school under harsh conditions during his childhood, and said no child must attend school in pain.

“With an enabling environment, every child can go to school and become useful citizen for the country,” he added.

Appeal

Mr Akakpo appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to absorb the school into the public system.

The new school block has an office, a library, store and computer laboratory.

The old school started in 2019 with 17 children, housed in the building of the local Church of Pentecost, until a permanent site was acquired in 2021 for the construction of a modern classroom facility.

Role model

The Paramount Chief of Aflao, Torgbuiga Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V, who graced the occasion, described Mr Akakpo as a true patriot of the land and conferred on him the title of Sohefia (youth leader).

Torgbuiga Fiti cited a CHPS compound built earlier by Mr Akakpo for the community and said his commitment to the development of his community made him a role model.

The head teacher of the Lente-Wute Basic School, Robert Blewusi Adzigbli, expressed gratitude for the new school block and appealed for more desks and computers for effective teaching and learning in the school.
