Dombo University management appeals for seed money

The Management of the SD Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) has made a passionate appeal to the government to grant the university its seed money to enhance the conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning.

The Chairman of the SDD-UBIDS Council, Kweku Yamoah Paintsil, who made the appeal at the second congregation of the university in Wa in the Upper West Region, said the SDD-UBIDS, like the Canaanite woman in the Holy Bible on dogs eating cramps under the table of the king, would take any left-over from the government’s expenditure.

He said management was putting the request to the wind, hoping that it would land in the Jubilee House since the government had the responsibility of creating the needed infrastructure and environment to ensure effective teaching and learning on campus.

According to Mr Paintsil, the lack of funds had hindered the progress of the university.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who was the special guest of honour, decried the unavailability of the seed money that had resulted in many uncompleted projects at the university.

In sympathising with the management of the university, Mr Bagbin donated a sum of GH¢50,000 to them to address some of the challenges.

Increase enrolment

The Vice-Chancellor of the SDD-UBIDS, Professor Philip Duku Osei said in spite of all those infrastructure difficulties such as modern library, the university had been able to increase student enrolment for the past three years.

According to the vice chancellor, in 2021, the university enrolled 1,746 and 2022, a total of 2,333 were enrolled, while 2,450 students were enrolled in 2023.

Prof. Osei said the figures could have been doubled if there was an enabling environment and adequate facilities.

On human resource, Prof. Osei said with no funds for the recruitment of new staff into faculties and schools, management had resorted to, in consultation with other universities to strengthen the faculties to enhance teaching.

He mentioned that a proposal the university had won with a foreign university was to make it possible for assembling motorbikes to assist farmers to plough their lands since such facilities had been the biggest challenge of farmers over the years.

Overall best student

The main attraction of the congregation was when a female graduate of the Project Planning and Community Development, Charity Antwi, who emerged the Overall Best student, monopolised all the special prizes.

Some of the awards she won included the best graduating student award, Chairman of the University Council award, Fidelity Bank award and the Dean’s award.

In her valedictory speech, Ms Antwi expressed her utmost gratitude to all those who assisted them to graduate successfully in spite of the various challenges on campus.
