German university to assist in training of cardiologists

Johannes WaltenbergerThe Head of the Department of Cardiology at the University Hospital Muenster (UHM), Professor Johannes Waltenberger, has arrived in the country from his German base as part of efforts to improve cardiology practice in Ghana.

The six-day visit was arranged and sponsored by the Goodwill Sports Ambassador, Mr Ray Quarcoo, who, together with Dr Alfred Doku, is now undergoing a four-year specialist training at UHM, in co-ordination with the Head of Ghana’s Mission in Berlin, Mr Paul Aryene.

The visit is  to help strengthen the existing co-operation in training of cardiologists between Ghana and the UHM.

This cooperation has resulted in the training of cardiology specialists and the referral of a number of patients from Ghana, including Quarcoo, who have undergone successful opened heart surgery under the care and treatment of the professor.

The visit will create a platform for to share his rich experience with Ghanaian counterparts, as well as offer the opportunity to explore other areas of cooperation

As part of activities lined up for his visit, the German medical expert will meet the management team of the Ghana National Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) and also make a presentation at the La Palm Beach Hotel.

The medical expert will also hold a lecture at the Department of Medicine, Medical Block, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in a cardiovascular symposium organised by the Department of Medicine and the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, in collaboration with the AstraZeneca Scientific Office.
