ABL signs MoU with Takoradi Poly

Mr Metcalf (4th left) presenting the MoU to Rev. Prof. Nyarko in the presence of officials of ABL and the polytechnic. The Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Takoradi Polytechnic to provide practical skills training for undergraduates, as well as the continuous development of human resource.

The MoU, which covers a four-year period, will present an opportunity for students of the polytechnic to acquire in-depth technical knowledge, training and skills from the brewery. The students will be engaged in a six-month annual internship in the areas of joint research projects, sponsorship and attendance of implementation seminars. Others include familiarisation tours of the brewery, development training, as well as the opportunity of being recruited permanently by the company.

As a measure of the mutually beneficial relationship, employees of ABL,  especially those within the technical function will have access to in-service training with the polytechnic. The institution provides training programmes in automation, mechanical and electrical engineering amongst others. It also has an ultra-modern training facility in mechanical and electrical engineering skills including mechatronics and programmable logic controls.

Rev. Prof. Daniel A. Nyarko, Rector, appended his signature to the MoU on behalf of the Takoradi Polytechnic, while Mr Gregory Metcalf, Managing Director, signed for ABL.

In his remarks, Mr Metcalf said the company was ready to embrace partnership with related organisations as it serves as a platform to support the academia to meet industry requirements through training of students and by extension developing the nation’s human resources.

Commenting, Rev. Prof. Nyarko said there was the need to make academic training relevant to the needs of the industrial sector, adding that “If we train students and industry does not find any use for them, then our training is in vain so we need the input of industry in everything that we do. We cannot go solo and government cannot do everything, therefore we are glad today we are signing this MoU with ABL.”

He expressed his sincere gratitude for the cordial relationship that has existed between the ABL and the Takoradi Polytechnic, pointing out that “We will operationalise the MOU to make a meaningful impact on both sides.”

Since 2007, students from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ghana and the Accra Polytechnic have also benefited from similar partnerships with ABL.
