Furnishing of Job 600 office complex to begin soon

Furnishing of the Job 600 office complex for members of Parliament is scheduled to begin soon following the release of a $24 million loan by Fidelity Bank for the project.

The agreement was passed by the House in September last year, but some controversy arose with regard to certain clauses, a situation which led to a referral of the agreement to the Attorney-General’s office for scrutiny and advice.

That development delayed the completion of the project but at last Friday’s sitting of the House, the Speaker, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, announced that the Attorney-General had cleared the agreement and added that the amount had been released to enable work to resume on the complex.

Mr Adjaho made the announcement after some members had expressed frustration about the lack of office accommodation to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.

The MP for Ablekuma North, Mr Justice Joe Appiah, and other members of the minority made the point that most members “operated from the booths of their cars,” a situation which made them ineffective as MPs.

They rejected suggestions by others that part of their MPs share of the District Assemblies Common Fund should be used to furnish the offices if there was going to be a delay in the release of the loan by Fidelity Bank.

Mr Adjaho’s intervention settled the matter.
