Muslims condemn clash between two sects

The Federation of Muslim Councils of Ghana (FMC) has received with sadness news of bloody clashes between two youth groups belonging to the Ahlussunah Wal-Jamaa’a and Tijaniyya sects at Aboabo No.2 in Kumasi leading to the destruction of property and bloody physical injuries.

The clash, as reported by a section of the media, was sparked by disagreement over a religious comment on Facebook.

A statement signed by the General Secretary of the FMC, Hajj Muhammad Amir Kpakpo Addo, said the FMC found it most unfortunate that just two weeks to the beginning of fasting in the holy month of Ramadan, and six months to national election when Ghanaians were clamouring for peace, certain Muslims would find time to descend into bloodletting over a trivial matter as a Facebook religious comment without recourse to dialogue.

Disgrace to Islam

“This, indeed, is despicable, shameful and a disgrace to Islam, the religion of peace! The FMC, therefore, wishes to advise the belligerent groups to cease hostilities and enter into dialogue,” it said.

The statement called on the leaders of the two sects to quickly intervene to foster good relations among their followers, forestall any recurrence of hostilities and let peace reign in Kumasi and Ghana.

“We reiterate our advice to users of social media, especially WhatsApp and Facebook, to measure their remarks and posts on their respective platforms in order not to endanger the peace Ghanaians are enjoying,” it added.
