He said it was important for leaders to strive and work hard to leave a legacy for the next generation.

“Legacies are what give meaning to our lives and make them purposeful,’’ he said.

The former President was speaking at a memorial lecture to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Bishop Paul Owusu-Tabiri, the founder of the Bethel Prayer Ministry.

The Bishop died in Accra on June 2, 2005

The legacy

Former President Kufuor urged everyone to walk in the late Bishop’s footsteps, since he was an example of a life well lived.

He described Bishop Owusu-Tabiri’s leadership skills as dynamic through the way he promoted and uplifted the teachings of God.

“He offered such dynamic leadership and sacrificed all he had to win souls for God,’’ he said.

Mr Kufuor, who pointed out that the late Bishop had been his personal pastor, stated that Owusu-Tabiri’s legacy would forever be remembered.

“Most good leaders are able to leave such wonderful legacies even before they are gone, and such was the bishop,’’ he said.

The lecture

The President of the Regent University of Science and Technology, Prof Kingsley Larbi, described the late founder of the church as a businessman, police officer and an outstanding church leader.

He said the late leader contributed his quota to society in his own way by giving hope to the hopeless, according to the will of God.

“He made his contributions to stir our consciousness as we came into contact with diseases, poverty, ignorance and filth in our own environment,’’ he added.

He urged leaders to emulate the late Bishop’s great leadership skills.

The memorial lecture was attended by pastors of the Bethel Prayer Ministry, the wife and the children of the late bishop and some members of the church.

Contemporary Christians

In the lecture, Prof. Larbi advised Christians to exhibit traits of accountability, investment and sharing.

He stated that it was necessary for Christians to support the poor and the needy, saying that was a core value no Christian should ignore.

Addressing the issue of over dependence, he said the contemporary Christian should not always depend on bishops and pastors for prayer.

‘’Sometimes the picture is painted that prayers alone will automatically solve every problem without any human effort,’’ he said, adding, “The masses are not able to stand alone on their feet as taught in the Scriptures,’’ he added.
