KATECO old students refurbish school’s sickbay

The Old Students Association of Kaneshie Technical School (KATECO) has handed over a newly refurbished sickbay to its alma mater at a cost of about GH¢40,000.

The new facility was equipped with medical supplies to aid the school to provide health care delivery to students on campus in case of minor health issues.

The facility was named after an alumnus of the school, Mr Seth Steven Fiati, for his contribution towards the establishment of the sickbay and other projects in the school.

In a short ceremony to hand over the facility to the school in Accra, the Member of Parliament (MP) of Ablekuma Central Constituency, Mr Ebenezer Narh Nartey, said he was proud of the provision of the sickbay by the old students.

He said his office would continue to work with the government to take steps to upgrade the school in order to increase enrollment and provide quality education.

As a result, he observed that the collaboration between the school authority and his office has led to the school emerging as one of the best debate schools in Greater Accra.

He urged the school authorities to take good care of the facility to prolong its lifespan.

Also, an alumnus of the school, the MP donated 10 boxes of sanitizers, 10 thermometer guns and nose masks to help efforts by the government to fight the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Contests

The President of the association, Mrs Winifred Odoi, expressed her excitement to witness the zeal with which the year groups created their own contests to beat one another to ensure that the school sickbay project became a reality.

She said the sickbay was needed to help provide health care delivery to students on campus in case of minor health issues.

A sickbay is needed in every institution to control minor health issues from escalating and therefore facilities such as this will help provide the needed support to students.

He also used the opportunity to entreat parents and guardians to help support the school for the benefit of their children, as that was a shared responsibility.

Collaboration

For his part, a Credit Risk Manager at Standard Chartered Bank, Mr Robert Addey, asked for a strong collaboration between the government and the old students to improve the school.

“I believe that the government cannot do the work alone but with collective effort from individuals and groups such as the old students association.”

According to him, the involvement of old students in the development of public schools in Ghana is pivotal and could not be overemphasised.

He said the donation made was to show appreciation for the education and development KATECO provided them when they were young.

Appreciation

The Head Mistress of the school, Mrs Pearl Bruce, expressed gratitude to individuals who had supported the school in various ways over the years especially Mr Fiati.

According to her, the project would go a long way to help the school address some of the challenges it was presently facing.

“I thank the old student association for its generous contribution and for making the dream of having a sickbay a reality,” she added.
