A BBC account quotes Texas Governor Greg Abbott as identifying the suspect as an 18-year-old male called Salvador Ramos.

The suspect was armed with a handgun and an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, two law enforcement sources have confirmed to the BBC's US partner, CBS News.

He also had high-capacity ammunition magazines when he entered the school, according to the sources.

The suspect is dead, and was believed to have been killed by officers sent to scene.

According to Abbott, Ramos abandoned his vehicle and went into the school armed with a pistol and possibly a rifle.

"He shot and killed horrifically, incomprehensibly, 14 students and killed a teacher," Abbott said.
