REGSEC maps out flood high-risk communities in Accra where residents are to remain vigilant and comply with safety directives
The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has mapped out several flood-risk areas across the region for heightened monitoring and intervention, as the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) has warned that Accra faces heightened flood risk this June, with rainfall totals projected between 100 and 150 millimetres across the Coastal Zone.
Some of the areas named in a statement issued on June 10, 2026, and signed by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ms Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo are Odawna and Official Town in the Adabraka area, Sahara in the Dansoman area, Alajo, particularly the D.K. Poison and Polo Park areas, Berlin Bridge and Downside in the Nima area, as well as Jelil Estate Junction, Baba Yara Area and Akorli Down in Madina.
Osu Alata, Osu Doku and the Abelemkpe Methodist Church areas are also among communities considered vulnerable to flooding by REGSEC.
Following this, the REGSEC has asked for increased monitoring of major drainage catchment areas in parts of Weija-Gbawe, Ga West and Ga East such as Old Barrier, Choice, Tetegu and Oblogo in Weija-Gbawe; Manhean, Afuaman and Medie in Ga West; and Dome Crossing, GAEC Road, Christian Village Drain and the Dakyibi River catchment areas in Ga East.
All these areas mentioned by the Greater Accra REGSEC in the statement have been identified as areas requiring special attention as authorities intensify flood preparedness efforts.
Action
Residents in these areas have therefore been advised to remain vigilant and comply with safety directives as authorities step up preparations for the peak rainy season and the upcoming Homowo celebrations.
The statement said the measures were aimed at reducing the risk of flooding while supporting security arrangements for Homowo festivities across the region.
As part of the exercise, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have been directed to intensify drainage maintenance and sanitation activities.
The statement said local authorities have been instructed to clear silt, debris and waste from drains and waterways before the expected peak rainfall period.
