'I have so much confidence in the guys' – Fatawu Issahaku backs Black Stars to start strong
Black Stars winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku says the team is fit, focused and ready to make Ghana proud as they prepare for Wednesday's 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Panama in Toronto.
Speaking after Sunday's training session at Bryant University to the Ghana Football Association website, the Leicester City forward said the mood in camp is positive and the squad is determined to start the tournament strongly.
Positive energy in camp
Asked about training so far, Issahaku said: "So far, so good. The energy in camp is great, and everyone is ready. Training is going well and we're just getting ready."
He added that he has personally enjoyed the sessions. "It's positive — I can see the changes. We're getting fit and getting ready for the game."
Second World Cup appearance
The winger, who is preparing for his second FIFA World Cup, expressed his excitement at being part of the team again.
"I feel amazing because it's always a dream come true to be part of a World Cup team. I'm privileged to be part of this team, and this is my second time. The first time was about experience and I learnt a lot. Now I'm going to put in everything to help the team get to a better position," he said.
Confidence in the squad
Issahaku expressed strong confidence in Ghana's chances at the tournament.
"Looking at the team, I have so much confidence in the guys. Everyone is ready and the training we're doing is helping. I think it's going to make us fitter, improve us, and help the team move forward," he stated.
Message to Ghanaians
The Leicester City winger urged Ghanaians to continue their support for the team.
"My message to Ghanaians is simple: keep the support and keep praying for us. We'll be here working hard to make you proud," he said.
World Cup campaign ahead
Ghana will face Panama in their Group L opener at BMO Field in Toronto on Wednesday, June 17 2026, at 11:00pm GMT. The Black Stars will then take on England in Boston on June 23 before facing Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
Issahaku, who has become a key player for the Black Stars since his debut, will be expected to provide creativity and pace on the flank. His ability to take on defenders and deliver crosses will be crucial against a Panama side that will likely defend deep.
The team departed Rhode Island for Toronto on Monday, with an official training session scheduled at BMO Field on Tuesday. Ghana will be without midfielder Thomas Partey for the Panama match following a visa decision by Canadian authorities.
Issahaku's confidence and positive assessment of the team's preparation will encourage Ghanaian fans who are hoping for a strong start to the tournament. The Black Stars have not won a match since October 2025 and will be desperate to end that run against Panama.
