Ghana officially launched Ghana House in Glasgow on Friday, unveiling a national hub designed to promote the country’s tourism, culture, investment opportunities and sporting achievements throughout the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The colourful ceremony at St. Enoch Place brought together Team Ghana officials, members of the Ghanaian community in the United Kingdom, Commonwealth Sport representatives and government officials, including Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, a representative of the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts as well as Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority, Fred Awaah.
The initiative forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to leverage the Commonwealth Games as a platform for global engagement beyond sport.
Opening the event, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Richard Akpokavie said Ghana House represented more than a hospitality venue, describing it as “a celebration of the enduring power of sport to unite people, inspire nations and build friendships that transcend borders, race, language and culture.”
He noted that while Team Ghana’s athletes were chasing medals, the GOC remained committed to strengthening sports governance, youth development, integrity and inclusion through partnerships among government, the private sector and development partners.
Chairman of the Ghana House Coordination Committee, Kobena Mensah Woyome, recounted how the project evolved from the initial concept of “Ghana Village” into Ghana House after stakeholders recognised the need for a permanent national platform at major international sporting events.
“We were no longer planning an event; we were laying the foundation for a national platform that could accompany Ghana wherever international sport takes us,” he said.
Woyome added that the project demonstrated that “great national projects are built when people choose cooperation over ownership,” expressing hope that Ghana House would become a permanent feature at future Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
Officially declaring the facility open, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland, Sabah Zita Benson described Ghana House as “a national home abroad and a symbol of Ghana’s global engagement.”
She said the venue was “not simply an exhibition venue” or “merely a hospitality centre,” but “a national home” reflecting Ghana’s hospitality, identity and confidence in engaging the international community.
Encouraging the Ghanaian diaspora to make the venue their meeting point during the Games, she urged Team Ghana to compete with courage, integrity and discipline, adding that whether or not they reached the podium, they would continue to inspire the nation through the honour with which they represented Ghana.
“Ghana House reflects confidence in our future, the power of partnership and the unity of our people,” the High Commissioner said.
“May it strengthen friendships, inspire opportunities, celebrate Team Ghana’s achievements and remind every Ghanaian, wherever they are, that we remain one nation with one shared destiny.”
Ghana House will host exhibitions, cultural performances, business networking events and tourism promotion activities, as well as showcase Ghanaian food and culture throughout the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
