Yusif Basigi promises Premiership action for Sekondi-Takoradi

The technical director of Sekondi Hasaacas, Yusif Basigi, says he anticipates the return of premiership football to the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis after many years of absence from the elite division of Ghana football.

The Western Region used to boast two traditional clubs - Hasaacas and Eleven Wise - who have not featured in the Ghana Premier League since their relegation over a decade ago.

The two clubs have contributed immensely to promote the region, while drawing many businesses to that geographical area by producing talents for the various national teams in the past. However, the story is quite different today as they are found in the  lower divisions of l Ghana football.

Unlike Wise who were relegated in the 2009/2010 season, Hasaacas participated in the 2013/14 season but failed to maintain their form in the subsequent year, leading to their demotion in the 2015/16 season.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Yusif Basigi said it was quite unfortunate that for four years now, Hasaacas had not been able to secure a premiership ticket after tasting a second demotion in the 2015/16 season.

“The lack of the Premiership games at the Essipon Sports Stadium played a role for the facility to deteriorate as it serves as our  home grounds.renovations would have taken place if we were playing in the premiership’’he stated.

Basigi, who doubles as the coach of Hasaacas Ladies, disclosed that the Sekondi community had been boring due to the absence of Premiership football, hence they were working assiduously to get the club back to elite division.

“We are poised to qualify for the 2020 /21 season and our performance has been very good, but due to the pandemic everything has been disrupted,” he noted.

According to him ,supporters of the traditional clubs would play an important role to help them succeed.

He, however, bemoaned the financial challenges facing some traditional clubs which had led to their relegation, including Hasaacas.

Hasaacas were second in the Zone Two league in Division One with 26 points, behind Skyy FC of Daboase who had 28 points before the  league was suspended in March.
