Water Ladies urged to help fight galamsey

The President of Water Ladies Association, Mrs Juliana Amponsah Asiamah, has called on all female staff of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to add their voices to the calls by the government and well-meaning Ghanaians to stop galamsey now.

She said if the women refused to join in the fight against illicit mining, a time would come when the company might not get water to treat at all and when that happened their salaries would not be paid any longer, since there would be no product to sell to customers.

Mrs Asiamah said this when addressing the Western Regional branch of the Water Ladies Association in Takoradi.

The national executive of Water Ladies’ Association embarked on a nationwide tour of all galamsey-affected treatment plants of the company to learn, at first hand, the extent to which illegal mining was negatively impacting the operations of the company.

Pollution

The president disclosed that when the executive members went to Kyebi, she was shocked to the marrow at the level of pollution of the Birim River.

Mrs Asiamah observed that the galamsey situation facing the country was a time bomb and a disaster waiting to happen.

She said, “if the campaign is not sustained to achieve the desired results, posterity will judge us quite harshly”.

Mrs Asiamah highly commended the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Citi FM and other media partners, as well as the Christian Council of Ghana for their advocacy roles aimed at nipping galamsey in the bud.

Speaking to the ladies at the plant, the Station Manager for the Daboase Water Treatment Plant, Mr Joseph Kwarteng, said the government was doing quite a great job and urged all Ghanaians to come on board to sustain the momentum.

He disclosed that the impact of the galamsey activities was catastrophic and must not be allowed to continue.
