The residents, who were mainly from Teshie, La and Nungua, were screened by health personnel from the La General, 37 Military and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospitals.

They were screened for breast cancer, underwent HIV testing and counselling, blood pressure checking, ear and throat examination, random blood sugar testing and eye examination.

Beneficiaries were given medications while those with complications were referred to the appropriate health centres for further treatment.

Beneficiaries

The free health screening is an annual exercise organised by the CREW as part of its social responsibility to the communities in which the church operates as well as demonstrate love towards mankind.

Over 500 residents joined in the exercise which made them aware of their health status and the need to observe healthy lifestyles for a disease-free life.

Many others, including children, the aged, the vulnerable and the physically challenged, were also registered onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), while others had their expired cards renewed for free.

The entire exercise was sponsored by Sharp Pharmaceuticals, Lynch Medicals, Indus Pharmaceuticals, Coca Cola, among others.

Supporting government

Addressing the people before the start of the programme, the President of CREW, Dr Mrs Davina Markwei, said the screening was also part of the church’s effort at supporting the government towards ensuring a healthy society.

She noted that although the government was doing its part by providing affordable health care to Ghanaians, it could not do all by itself, “hence the need for stakeholders such as us to assist”.

“As a church, we recognise the need to practise and promote the central theme of Christianity, which includes healing the sick and reaching out to those in need, alongside preaching the Word,” she said.

Dr Mrs Markwei stressed that CREW would continue to embark on the exercise every year, adding that it was planning other initiatives to help communities within the metropolis.

Advice

In a speech read on her behalf, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ledzokuku, Ms Benita Sena Okity-Duah, lauded the initiative by the group and called on other stakeholders to emulate.

She advised the residents to live and observe healthy lifestyles.

The MP presented GH¢5000 to support the programme.
