Sarah Adwoa Safo referred to Bank Hospital for further treatment after shooting incident

Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has been referred to The Bank Hospital for further medical treatment after she was struck by pellets in a shooting incident last Sunday.

Sources close to the former MP have confirmed that she was receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, where some of the pellets were removed from the left side of her face, the back of her head, her left ear, and her lower jaw. However, some pellets remain embedded.

"It was not bullets, the injuries are from pellets that went through the car's window and are now embedded in her face and head," said a source who had not been authorised to speak.

Doctors have referred her to the Bank Hospital for further treatment, although sources say she is also considering treatment options outside the country.

She was visited at the hospital today (June 23, 2026) by Abena Osei Asare, Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, and Mavis Nkansah Boadu, Member of Parliament for Afigya Sekyere East constituency.

Meanwhile, the Circuit Court in Adenta has admitted nine persons to bail for their alleged roles in the shooting incident. The accused are Israel Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, Tamaklo Safo Jehosaphat, Kwabena Safo, Benjamin Amoakwa Sam, Badu Enoch, Richard Ayitey, Gideon Safo, Nana Kwaku Afriyie, and Kwadwo Safo Koomson.

They have been charged with five counts of use of offensive weapon, possession of explosive firearms and ammunition, prohibition of vigilante groups and activities, discharging guns in town, and causing unlawful damage. The accused persons have pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 each with two sureties each.

Per the facts of the case, the incident occurred on June 21, 2026, when armed men denied Sarah Adwoa Safo access to a house at Kwabenya where a ceremony was reportedly being held to install a successor to the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, founder of the Kristo Asafo Church. The standoff escalated into gunfire, in which the complainant sustained gunshot wounds to the left side of her face, the back of her head, her left ear, and her lower jaw.

According to the prosecution, Adwoa Safo's Landcruiser Toyota Prado, valued at GH¢450,000, was also extensively damaged. The prosecution added that the accused, most of whom were described as private security guards alongside a businessman and a farmer, were found in possession of six Mosberg pump-action guns, three pistols, thirty-three rounds of 9mm ammunition, and forty-two AA cartridges, none of which were covered by any licence or permit.

According to the facts before the court, further searches led to the retrieval of two additional pistols loaded with 20 live rounds concealed in a bag, a third pistol loaded with 13 rounds, and — from a second house belonging to Nana Akofena — 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 pieces of 40mm ammunition, and 25 pieces of 45mm ammunition, which he admitted owning. Nana Akofena, who was arrested on June 22, denied the offence, telling investigators he had left the scene before the shooting occurred.
