Prof. Quaye Archampong made fellow of American College of Surgeons

A renowned Ghanaian surgeon, Prof. Emmanuel Quaye Archampong has been awarded Honorary Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons.

Prof. Archampong, an emeritus professor of the College of Health Sciences University of Ghana, Legon, was honored for his contributions to medical education in West Africa.

He was awarded alongside five other prominent surgeons from Australia, India, France, Argentina and Barbados at the October 4 Convocation that preceded the official opening of Clinical Congress 2015 in Chicago.

 

Citation

In a citation presented to him, it read “A Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in England and Edinburgh, Professor Archampong is a highly regarded clinician and clinical investigator, a consummate bedside teacher, and a mentor to generations of West African surgeons”.

“He has, by his dedicated application and singular devotion, made significant contributions to the development of postgraduate medical education in West Africa in the areas of appropriate, affordable and accessible surgical practices, and in the acquisition of hands-on skills in surgical manpower development.

“Blessed with a charming disposition and exemplary character, Professor Archampong personifies the true breed of the West African surgical personality, it read.

Lifetime achievement

Prof. Archampong dedicated 50 years of his working life to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).

Following the honorary done him, the Surgical Department of the KBTH threw a party in honour of Prof. Archeampong last Thursday.

Through mentorship of undergraduate trainees in many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Prof. Archampong has helped develop postgraduate training through the West African College of Surgeons of which he was President from 1997 to 1999.

He said is a recipient of the National Honours of the Republics of Ghana and Senegal and has also used surgery as an anvil and a tool for community development efforts in rural and underserved regions of Africa, be they directly or indirectly through programmes sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

African countries that have benefitted from his expertise included Nigeria, The Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Currently, Prof. Archampong lectures at the College of Health Sciences and attached to the Ministry of Health through the Ghana Medical and Dental Council to set standards on medical practices.

The Director of Medical Affairs at KBTH, Dr Samuel Asiamah, in his remarks at the party, said the Prof.  Archampong was an icon of the hospital, adding “we are proud to have been associated with him”.

He said the award was a lifetime achievement which honored his hard work and dedication to service.

He said his good works did not only put his name in the books around the world but the hospital where he practiced, adding that he is an inspiration.

Prof. Archampong thanked the management of the hospital and the American College of Surgeons for the honour done, saying although he is doing his bid to serve humanity, he was grateful that his work was recognised beyond the borders of Africa.
