“Sir, evidence from similar strikes have resulted in the disruption of the academic calendar of tertiary institutions, a situation which has not been favourable to any Ghanaian student,” they said in a statement issued in Accra yesterday.

It cited the indefinite postponement of the reopening of the University of Ghana, which was hitherto, August 13, 2014, and pointed out that such disruptions forced students to complete their academic work in limited time.

The statement was jointly signed by the President of the University of Ghana Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Mr Reginald Arthur, and the President of the Students Representative Council (SRC), Mr Joshua Doggbey.

It said apart from such industrial actions disrupting the academic calendars of the universities and other tertiary institutions, their image was highly affected.

“Many students from across the globe have over the years built confidence in our educational system. However, prolonged strikes pose a direct threat to this hard-earned reputation. International students get stranded in the midst of these strikes and thus send wrong signals to their home countries,” the statement said.

It also said it behoved the government and the other stakeholders to take appropriate actions that would prevent the breakdown of the educational structure at the highest level.

Since July 24, 2014, members of UTAG have been on strike over the non-payment of the book and research allowance.
