The Volta Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mawutor Agbavitor, has reiterated the need for recommitment to probity and accountability in the service of the nation.
That, he said, was essential to propel national development and provide for the welfare of the majority of the people.
Mr Agbavitor was speaking to the media last Saturday on the birthday of the Founder of the NDC, President J.J. Rawlings, which falls today, June 22, 2026.
The celebration, he said, should transcend fanfare, colours and speeches, and be centred on sober reflections on the values that gave the party its identity.
Formed in June 1992 out of the Provisional National Defence Council, the NDC positioned itself as the party of transparency, social justice and public integrity.
For almost three-and-a-half decades, the tenets of probity and accountability have been relevant to giving hope and speaking truth to power.
That, the Regional Chairman said, was important for the party leaders, cadres and supporters who believe in these principles.
On Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), Mr Agbavitor said that it was necessary to ensure probity and accountability.
He, therefore, called on all fugitives to return home to face accountability.
"It is important to know that today, Ghanaian voters have become more sophisticated with high expectations, and demand more from the political class and others who have been entrusted with public office," he said.
Mr Agbavitor, under whose reign the party secured 100 per cent for members of Parliament, said the NDC was now placed in a very unique position of leading the country.
"I am delighted that all stakeholders and civil society organisations, among others, are tracking public projects and everyday conversations and want leaders to account for everything that they are entrusted with," he said.
The NDC, he said, remained a major pillar of the country’s development and democracy, as its conduct set a tone for national development and responsiveness to the needs of every Ghanaian.
Mr Agbavitor underscored the urgent need for hard work, dedication and commitment to work to restore public trust, reassure voters that the party’s founding ethos was not archival material, but strengthen internal discipline to deter misconduct among appointees and office holders.
Principles
"The principles give weight to the party’s critique of corruption and will attract young voters, as well as give a signal to a new generation that politics can be clean and propel growth," he stressed.
Mr Agbavitor also advocated the need to bring back the annual accountability lecture as part of future anniversaries, where the party look into itself, records and invites public scrutiny.
"On the broader scale, probity and accountability should not be relegated to only the leadership, ministers, MPs and other office holders but branch and ward executives who manage dues, campaign resources and community projects.
"If the NDC family wants its 40th anniversary to be celebrated with grandeur and greater public goodwill, then work must begin now, so that we leave a legacy that will ensure that the crowd cheers our history and the country judges our honesty," he said.
The chairman used the occasion to assure party faithful to remain loyal to the party, as everything was being done to create opportunities for all.
