Nkontompo AME Zion Girls schooled on menstrual hygiene

Pupils of the Nkontompo AME Zion School, Western Region have been educated on basic menstrual hygiene practices to safeguard them from infections and build their confidence on menstural dignity.

The teenagers learned about how to properly care for themselves during their menstrual period; how to change their sanitary towels, the need to maintain personal hygiene and the need to practise abstinence from pre-marital sex.

They were also sensitised to the myths and misconceptions associated with menstruation.

The event which formed part of activities to celebrate this World Menstrual Hygiene Day was organised by the Equibloom Foundation in collaboration with Ghanstock, GoEnergy, Yebed, Geronimo, CargoCare Ghana limited and the Public Health Unit of the Effiekwanta Hospital, Western Region.

Misconceptions

They were sensitised on some of the misconceptions about menstruation that it was abnormal for one’s period to last for just three days and one cannot cook during their menstruation.

The Founder of the Equibloom Foundation, Ursula Adadzewa Fynn stated that for many girls something as natural as a period could quietly become a reason to miss contact hours in school, hide in shame or suffer silience.

She noted that many young girls across the country struggled to get basic sanitary kits and proper menstrual hygiene education adding, all it took was an act of kindness to remind these teenagers that they matter.

“World Menstrual Hygiene Day is not just a woman issue, it is dignity , it is confidence, it is education.

That is why we visited the Nkontompo AME Zion School to educate them on menstrual hygiene.

Mrs Fynn urged the young girls to take good care of themselves as young ladies and encouraged them to keep the pledge cards that was shared to them to serve as a reminder for them always to abstain from pre-marital sex for a brighter future.

The pupils were given sanitary pads that could last for at least two menstrual cycles.

One of the students expressed gratitude to the foundation and prayed more of this encounter with them on behalf of the other students.
