Mobile telecommunications operator, MTN Ghana, has donated to the Ga Traditional Council to support this year’s Homowo Festival.
The donation consisted of GH¢30,000 in cash, GH¢2,000 airtime, five cartons of assorted soft drinks, hampers, foreign schnapps and Castle Bridge.
It forms part of activities marking the telecommunications company’s 30th anniversary in Ghana and reinforces its commitment to supporting cultural heritage, community development and national cohesion.
The support comes ahead of this year’s Homowo celebrations, one of the most significant traditional festivals of the Ga people, which attracts thousands of participants from within and outside the country.ge
Beyond the donation, MTN Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to investing in education, health and economic empowerment, while expanding financial inclusion initiatives and customer education programmes across the country.
Presenting the items in Accra last Friday, the Chief Customer Experience Officer of MTN Ghana, Jemima Kotei-Walsh, said supporting communities and celebrating cultural festivals formed an integral part of the company’s contribution to national development.
She said although telecommunications remained MTN Ghana’s core business, the company recognised the importance of preserving the country’s cultural heritage and supporting initiatives that fostered unity and peaceful coexistence.
“As it is time for Homowo once again, it is an honour to be here on behalf of MTN Ghana to wish the people of the Ga State successful celebrations,” she said.
Financial inclusion
Mrs Kotei-Walsh said MTN Ghana would continue to deepen financial inclusion through its mobile money business by increasing financial literacy in communities across the country.
She explained that expanding access to financial services for petty traders, small and medium-sized enterprises and underserved groups would empower more people to grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
Appreciation
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Ga Traditional Council, the Nai Wulomo, Akwaa Mensah III, expressed appreciation to MTN Ghana for the gesture and described it as a significant milestone in the relationship between the company and the Ga State.
The Nai Wulomo said the donation demonstrated respect for the customs and traditions of the Ga people and reflected the importance of collaboration between traditional institutions and corporate organisations in promoting development.
