The facility, which was funded by ASA Savings and Loans Limited, has put to an end the difficulties encountered by the school in accessing potable water.

The school with a population of 3,161 had had serious water problems for many years and relied on water taps from the outskirts of the school as its source of drinking water.

The most affected section of the school was the girls dormitory annex which was not connected with water pipe.

A form three student of the school, Sindy Amponsah, told the Daily Graphic that students had been walking long distances in search of potable water for many years.

She said with the new water facility, she and her colleagues would no longer go to town to search for potable water which had always resulted in lateness in class.

Another form three student, Osei Lawrence, said he was happy because academic work would be enhanced because both teachers and students would no longer spend so much time looking for water before they attended classes.

Safe drinking water

At the handover ceremony of the new water facility last Thursday, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ASA Savings and Loans Limited, Mohammed Aourongjeb, said the company deemed it necessary as an important part of its work to provide safe drinking water for schools and deprived communities.

He said the new facility provided was in line with the company's corporate social responsibility (CSR) to communities which it operated in.

Regular monitoring

The CEO of ASA said officials of the company would be regularly monitoring the facility to ensure that it functioned properly at all times.

He urged students as well as the management of the school to put in place mechanisms that would ensure the sustainability of the water facility.

Power outages

For his part, the Headmaster of the school, Benjamin Okai Sakyi, said because the school's mechanised boreholes relied on electricity, power outages disrupted the flow of water.

He was happy that the new facility with an overhead polytank would supply the school with uninterrupted water every day.

Mr Sakyi who expressed appreciation to ASA for promptly responding to the school's plea for the provision of the water facility also appealed to the company to stock the school's new clinic with medical equipment to enable the school to offer quality healthcare services to both students and staff.

He assured the company that the school management would take good care of the facility to enable it to serve the purpose for which it was constructed.
