Ghana Gas to pay compensation to landowners

The Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) is to pay GH¢17 million as compensation to individuals and groups whose lands were acquired for the establishment of the gas processing plant at Atuabo in the Ellembelle Municipality in the Western Region. That follows the successful completion of the requisite surveys and valuation by the Land Valuation Board.

Also to be paid are beneficiaries on the Esiama-Prestea line.

The company has already disbursed an amount of GH¢7 million to farmers whose crops were destroyed during the early stages of the construction of the gas plant.

Dr George Adjah-Sipa Yankey, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GNGC, who disclosed this to newsmen at Atuabo, however, insisted that payment would only be made to the rightful landowners.

Corporate responsibility

The CEO's interaction with the press followed a donation of a 33-seater air conditioned bus to the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council at the Atuabo palace.

Two other buses at a total cost of GH¢800, 000, are also to be donated to the Western Nzema Traditional Council and the Elderly Care Home, near Ampeem in the Jomoro District and Ellembelle, respectively, as part of the company's corporate social responsibility.

Dr Yankey commended the landowners for their patience and expressed the hope that the company’s gesture would further strengthen the already cordial relationship between his outfit and the traditional authorities.

Appreciation

Awulae Amihere Kpanyinle II, the Omanhene of the Atuabo Traditional Area, on behalf of the chiefs and people, expressed his appreciation to the management of the company for the presentation.

He indicated that hitherto the chiefs had attended durbars and other important functions by hiring taxis and relying on other means of transportation, noting that the bus would facilitate their movement.

The Omanhene said the chiefs and people were gracious to host the gas processing plant in the municipality and that they would continue to offer their support to the government to realise its economic objectives.
