Ayensu Starch Factory workers lay down tools

Workers of the Ayensu Starch Factory at Bawjiase in the Central Region have embarked on a sit-down strike to demand better remuneration.

Wearing red clothes and arm bands, the workers vowed Monday not to work until their salaries had been increased.

One of the aggrieved workers told Accra-based Citi FM that management had failed to listen to their pleas for better remuneration.

He said some members of staff of the factory earn less than GHc200 per month, an amount he said was grossly insufficient.

Noting that workers’ salaries had not been increased in the last three years, the aggrieved worker vowed not to work until his pay had been increased.

The government announced in March that it was entering into a partnership with Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL) for the takeover and revamp of the Ayensu Starch Factory.

The  Minister of Trade and Industry at the time, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, said the essence of the deal was to “boost the production of the Ayensu Starch Factory to significantly increase cassava yields and make the crop economically viable to farmers”.
