While awaiting the processing of their sentence, the second convict, Kusi broke down and cried profusely for his mother while begging the investigator, Sergeant Daniel Sansah Yerture, for help.

According to the investigator, the victim/complainant managed to escape the attack, adding that the convicts were a notorious duo who operated along the Atomic Junction and Legon road in Accra.

The convicts were charged with first conspiring to commit the crime and for committing the crime. They pleaded guilty to both charges and were sentenced and convicted on their own plea by Sedinam Awo Balokah who presided over the case on Monday, May 22, 2023.

While delivering the sentence, the judge emphasised the seriousness of the crime and the impact it could have had on the victim’s life.

Facts of the case

Narrating the facts of the case, the prosecutor, Inspector Eric Abban, said the complainant/victim, Yaw Richard Essel, was a petty trader who lived around the Legon Mall in Accra while the convicts were residents of Madina, Accra.

According to the prosecutor, on May 7, 2023, at about 10.30 p.m., the complainant who was walking from work to his home at the Atomic Junction was attacked upon reaching the Presbyterian Boys Secondary School at Legon in Accra.

The prosecutor added that Agoro and Kusi who were then walking on the opposite side of the road crossed over and attacked the complainant with a knife drawn by the second convict, Kumi, and commanded him to bring his phone and money.

Inspector Abban said when the complainant refused to grant their request, the convicts attempted to harm him but he managed to escape.

“The next day, the complainant discussed with his friends around his vicinity about his ordeal, a follow-up was made by them and the two convicts were found at the Atomic Junction Bus Stop.”

According to the prosecutor, the complainant and his friends then searched them and a knife was retrieved from the first convict, Agoro. “Witnesses and the complainant arrested the convicts and handed them over to the Legon Police Station and a complaint was lodged,” the prosecutor added.

Inspector Abban further said investigations revealed that a day before the operation, the convicts met and planned and on the day of the incident, the knife used in committing the crime was procured by the second convict, Kusi, from his mother's kitchen.
