AshantiGold and Medeama will be Ghana’s representatives in the Champions League and Confederations Cup as winners of the First Capital Plus Premier League and MTN FA Cup respectively.

Ashgold begin their continental campaign next month when they host Algerian side MO Bejaia in the first round qualifier at the Len Clay Stadium at Obuasi, while Tarkwa-based Medeama, who drew a bye in the preliminary stage of the confederation cup, will face the winner of the match involving Al Ittihad of Libya and AS Sonidep of Niger in the 1/16th round clash.

In an interview with the GNA, the deputy minister said although the government was not in a position to support their participation due to lack of funds, the duo should excel in their campaign to attract corporate sponsorship.

‘‘They should go and make us proud. And I know once they start and they are performing well, who wouldn’t want to be associated with good things? I know there are others waiting to see how they will fare and I know a lot of corporate institutions will come on board to support.”

Mr Asamoah said Ashgold and Medeama have exhibited some level of professionalism, and that he would support the two clubs if funds were made available.

“Personally, I think these two clubs need to be supported because they have shown some level of professionalism in management’.’ he noted.

Ashantigold are returning to the Champions League after a long absence, having lost the final of the 1997 competition 4-5 on penalties to Moroccan side, Raja Casablanca.
