Ganiu wins day for Wonders

Eleven Wonders striker Abass Ganiu scored full marks for his side when his 84th minute volley against Great Olympics at the Accra Sports Stadium Sunday gave Wonders a 1-0 victory and lifted the Techiman based club from the relegation zone to the 11th position with 39 points.

Ganiu, who was at the right place at a right time during a goal mouth melee, turned hero for the day when he pounced on a ball that floated into the area and placed it beyond the reach of Olympics goalkeeper, Kwaku Stephen, who prior to conceding that late goal had made brilliant saves to the admiration of the home fans.

Celebration

Moments after scoring the goal, Ganiu celebrated by kneeling and thanking God for his feat.

Drama unfolded at the stadium seconds later when the goalkeeper of Eleven Wonders, John Kwadwo Moosie, suddenly fell onto the ground without any touch and started wriggling as if he had been hit by a missile.

As if it was a signal to waste time, two of his players also fell onto the pitch simultaneously, causing referee Phillip Arthur Forson to stop play for the players to be attended to.

Olympics' chances

Incidentally, Wonders' goal was scored against the run of play when Olympics who had been pinned in their own half, especially in the first half of the game, had found their rhythm and turned on the heat, probing for the opener.

Skipper Gladson Awako, Abdul Manaf Mudari, and Samuel Abbey-Ashie Quaye were at the fore-front of piling pressure on their opponents after the hour mark but they squandered the numerous goal scoring opportunities that came their way.

Olympics goal wastages started in the 67th minute when Awako's combination with Rodney Appiah saw the latter deep in the vital area of Wonders but as the fans stood up in anticipation of greeting a goal, the player shot wide over the bar.

It was at this stage that Wonders started pushing more men upfront and came close when Akorlor floated a volley to substitute Prince Okraku in the box but his efforts went waste until Ganiu came to the rescue of Wonders with his 84th minute goal to breathe life into their quest of staying afloat in the Ghana Premier League.
