Security agencies to enforce COVID-19 protocols

He disclosed that already, the military, police and Fire Service were manning some Premier League centres to enforce the protocols, and that additional measures were being taken for fans to wear their masks, wash their hands and socially distance themselves from one another.

“We are leaving nothing to chance; we are absolutely in control and with the support of the security agencies, we will enforce the President’s directives,” he told Graphic Sports in an exclusive interview last Thursday.

Delving into sporting activities for the year, Prof. Twumasi hinted that the national cross-country event would take place at Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region in a fortnight to usher in the year’s sporting calendar.

“This year’s cross-country event will be massive and we will take into account the COVID-19 situation and enforce all protocols, but sports must continue and we are also looking at the 2023 African Games, so time is of the essence,” he noted.

He further revealed that all NSA sporting facilities were open and operational for the 40 sporting disciplines in the country and, therefore, urged the various federations to start their leagues and other competitions.

“We are open, all sporting facilties are open; athletes can start training for the Olympics and other national events, as well as the local leagues. This year is going to be a wonderful sporting year in spite of the COVID-19,” he stressed.

He said the government had approved the NSA’s budget for the 2021 fiscal year but declined to mention the amount involved, except to indicate that special funds had been set aside for a massive infrastructural project.

“The government has set aside some funds for the construction of sports infrastructure that is different from the budget of the ministry and the NSA. Also, more technical, managerial and other auxiliary staff will be added to our stock,” he disclosed.

Prof. Twumasi challenged the leadership of the various sporting federations to adhere to and enforce the COVID-19 protocols among their membership and also make earnest preparations  for the sporting year.
