The Dagaaba and Frafra communities in the Accra-Tema metropolis will renew one of Ghana’s longest-running community sporting rivalries when the Dagaaba-Frafra Friendly Games return to El-Wak Stadium on September 5, 2026.
Now in its 29th edition, the annual gathering has evolved beyond sport into a celebration of friendship, culture and peaceful coexistence.
The 2026 event is themed “Unity in Diversity: The Dagaaba-Frafra Model for Peaceful Co-existence,” with organisers describing the relationship as one that has been nurtured from an informal bond into a national calendar event in Accra.
The strength of that bond was evident at last year’s 28th edition, when the Frafras dominated the sporting contests, winning both men’s and women’s volleyball and recording a 6-0 victory over the Dagaaba in women’s football.
The men’s football encounter ended 1-1, while the Dagaaba claimed the men’s sack race and lime-and-spoon contest.
Yet the competition has always been secondary to the friendship it represents.
The 2025 celebration attracted chiefs, parliamentarians, academics and other prominent figures, while Deputy Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Yussif Issaka Jajah, representing President John Dramani Mahama, praised the initiative for strengthening bonds, preserving heritage and promoting unity. President Mahama himself attended the Games in 2023.
The 2026 programme will combine football and basketball with cultural displays, traditional music and dance, while northern Ghanaian foods including tuo zaafi, tupaani, Bambara beans, koose and pito will be available.
Local artisans will also showcase traditional clothing and other products.
The organisers expect senior political and public figures, chiefs, queen mothers, academics and sports personalities to grace the occasion.
With the Frafra holding bragging rights from 2025, the Dagaaba will seek redemption on the field.
But beyond winners and losers, the bigger objective remains captured in the event’s guiding message: “One People, One Spirit, One Game, One Future.”
