Voting proceeds peacefully at Dome-Kwabenya NDC primaries

Voting is proceeding peacefully and in an orderly fashion at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission park for delegates from the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

With an expected voter population of 1,824 delegates, the queue when Graphic Online got there at 8:45 am, was long and winding.

The team left for other constituencies but when it returned to the same place at 2:45pm, that is, six hours after, there was no indication that much progress had been made even though election officials said voting was on course and that the queue was seemed to increasing in spite of the numbers that had cast their vote.

Regardless of the high turn out, the Presiding Officer, who is also the Ga East District Head of the EC, Madam Janet Koranteng told Graphic Online that as long as there were people still in the queue, voting will continue even after the closure time of 5pm in order to ensure that all delegates had the chance to vote and that no one would be disenfranchised.

She said the process had been smooth and peaceful adding that no challenge had been encountered.

Four persons are vying for the candidature of the NDC in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency.

They are Mrs Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, an entrepreneur, Mr Israel Nornyibey, a marketing consultant, Mr John Agbavitor, a businessman and Mr Godson Nii Ayidzaku Tackie, an accountant.

Similarly, voting at the Bawaleshie Presbyterian School Park has not experienced any challenge as at 1pm when the graphic online team got there.
That park, became famous following the incidents that took place during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election earlier this year.
It was the location where the NDC Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ningo-Prampram Constituency, Mr Sam George Nartey was manhandled by some 'national security operatives' partly responsible for the setting up of the Justice Emile Short Commission to probe the disturbances of that day.
Approaching the area with some mental caution, the graphic online team chanced on a group of party people cracking jokes that the park ought to be rechristened as "Sam George Park".
As at 1pm, the Presiding Officer, Mr Derrick Agyekum told graphic online that out of a total expected voter population of 1,039, those who had successfully cast their votes stood at 700.
He said there had been no challenges and that even with the possibility of voters completing before the closing time, EC officials will still wait till 5pm to begin counting of the votes.
