NPP, Fomena MP constitute "Majority Group" in Parliament - Speaker declares

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K. Bagbin has declared that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament together with the independent Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako constitute the Majority Group in Parliament.

This follows an official letter from Mr Asiamah Amoako to the Speaker in which he stated that he will do business with the NPP caucus in Parliament.

The Speaker before his declaration said the House has granted the request of the Fomena MP to do business with the NPP caucus in the Eighth Parliament.

"Honourable members, with this official declaration to the House, the House will accord him (Asiamah Amoako) space to do as he had stated," the Speaker said after reading the contents of his letter to the House.

"And so what we have now, you have the New Patriotic Party wing or caucus in Parliament together with the independent Member of Parliament from Fomena and they now constitute the majority group".

The Speaker's declaration was greeted with wild cheers from the NPP caucus, some of whom had arrived in Parliament as early as 4am to occupy the majority side of the Parliamentary chamber.

Structure of Eighth Parliament

The Eighth Parliament of Ghana comprises 275 seats with the NPP and National Democratic Congress (NDC) having 137 seats each with the remaining seat belonging to the independent Fomena MP.

Meanwhile, the two major political parties — the NPP and the NDC - are disputing the results of some Parliamentary polls and have filed eight election petitions each at various High courts.

The NDC constituencies in dispute are Buem, Kintampo North, Savelugu, Pusiga, Jomoro, Assin North, Banda and Krachi West.

With regard to the NPP, the seats in contention are Techiman South, Hohoe, Tano South, Tarkwa Nsuaem, Essikado Ketan, Tema West, Zabzugu and Sefwi Wiawso.

Twelve of the petitions — Techiman South, Savelugu, Pusiga, Banda, Jomoro, Krachi West, Tano South, Tarkwa Nsuaem, Essikado Ketan, Tema West, Zabzugu and Sefwi Wiawso — are on alleged electoral malpractices.

Two — Kintampo North and Assin North — relate to the eligibility of the elected MPs, while the remaining two — Hohoe and Buem — have to do with a decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) not to allow the people of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe and Lolobi (SALL) to vote in the parliamentary election.
