The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has begun a nationwide membership drive with a call on Ghanaians, particularly the youth, farmers, market women, students and professionals, to join the party and help reshape the country’s political landscape.
It said, the exercise was an invitation to every Ghanaian who still believed in what the party described as the “true Ghanaian dream”.
The Acting First Vice- Chairperson of the Working Committee of the CPP in-charge of finance, Joyce Larbie, disclosed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic.
She said the CPP, which led Ghana to independence under the leadership of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, remained committed to building a political tradition centred on the interests of ordinary Ghanaians.
‘Time for change’
Mrs Larbie said Ghanaians had for too long watched the country’s politics become a “duopoly of disappointment”, with the two dominant political parties taking turns in government while challenges such as hardship, unemployment and debt persisted.
“It is time to bring back the CPP that has the people at heart,” she said.
Mrs Larbie said the CPP was seeking to offer Ghanaians an alternative political platform as part of efforts to bring about what she described as real change in the country’s political landscape.
CPP’s record
The Acting First Vice-Chairperson pointed to the CPP’s historical record in industrialisation, education and health care as evidence of the party’s contribution to national development.
She said the CPP government established a number of state-owned enterprises, including Tema Steel, Akosombo Textiles, the Brick and Tile Factory and State Farms, as part of efforts to promote Ghanaian industrialisation.
On education, the official said the CPP championed free education from the primary level through to university, including free textbooks and boarding, to ensure that access to education was not determined by a family’s financial circumstances.
Mr Larbie also cited the construction and expansion of hospitals and clinics as part of the CPP’s contribution to healthcare delivery.
Easy membership
Mrs Larbie said to ensure a hassle-free membership drive, the CPP has introduced a simplified process for joining the party, with prospective members dialling *920*18# on any mobile network to register.
“No long forms, no bureaucracy. Your membership is secured in minutes,” she said.
She urged Ghanaians who wanted to see a different direction for the country to join the membership drive.
“We need to bring real change in the political landscape by bringing back the CPP,” Mrs Larbie said, adding: “Let us restore the Ghana that works for all, not for a few.”
