Kojo Bamba’s security message strategy helped him win NPP First Vice Chairman race - Nana Akomea

Nana Akomea, the Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has attributed Kojo Bamba’s victory in the party’s First National Vice Chairman election to his security message and the voting system used at the conference.

He said Bamba asked delegates to vote for two established candidates and “add” him to their choices because he would provide security for the party.

According to Nana Akomea, the strategy made Kojo Bamba a constant choice among delegates, helping him emerge as the candidate with the highest number of votes in an election in which delegates selected three candidates.

Nana Akomea made the observation in a television interview on Joy News's PM Express programme aired on Monday, October 5, 2026, a day after the NPP’s national delegates’ conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Kojo Bamba, whose official name is Kojo Fosu Boadu, polled 3,116 votes against 12 other candidates who contested the three positions.

Henry Nana Boakye, the immediate past national organiser popularly known as Nana B, placed second with 3,061 votes, while Nana Akomea, a former Managing Director of STC came third with 2,981 votes.

Different message

Nana Akomea said most of the leading candidates, including himself, campaigned on their long service to the party, experience and standing within the NPP.

He said Bamba adopted a different approach by telling delegates that the other candidates had served the party for many years and that he was not seeking to compete with them.

Instead, Bamba presented himself as someone who would provide security for party members, Nana Akomea said.

“He said vote for two of them and add me,” he said.

Nana Akomea said security was not a major part of the campaign messages of the other candidates.

“None of us was very focused on security,” he said, describing Bamba’s message as “clever because it was different”.

He said the message resonated with delegates, who developed a slogan around it and sang it whenever he visited them.

The constant choice

Nana Akomea said his interactions with delegates showed how Bamba’s strategy worked.

He said delegates told him they would vote for him and another established candidate, but would also include Bamba.

“Nobody told me we are going to vote for you and Mustapha Hameed or we are going to vote for you and Nana B,” he said.

“They said you are one of the two people plus Bamba.”

He described Bamba as “the only constant in all the conversations”.

Voting system

Nana Akomea also attributed Mr Bamba’s victory to the voting system used at the conference.

He explained that delegates did not vote separately for the First, Second and Third National Vice Chairmanship positions.

‘Party feels under siege’

Nana Akomea said the response to Bamba’s security message also reflected concerns among some grassroots members about their safety.

He alleged that NPP officials and supporters had been beaten by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during a by-election and after the December 2024 general election.

He said some forms of harassment were also continuing.

“The party feels under siege,” he said.

Nana Akomea said the grassroots had therefore responded to Mr Bamba’s message that he would help make them feel safe.

He, nonetheless, cautioned against interpreting Mr Bamba’s election as an indication of who would lead the party into the 2028 general election.

“You should not come in with the impression that the 2028 election is about Kojo Bamba,” he said.

He stressed that the leadership of the NPP was collective.
