The acting Medical Director of Health Services at the Ga South Hospital, Ms Jacqueline Sfarijlani, made this public yesterday when the management of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) donated 200 bags of cement in support of the project.

Why a blood bank

Ms Sfarijlani said the construction of the blood bank had become necessary because over the past years, the hospital had been depending mainly on the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for blood for its patients.

She added that a blood bank would also ensure the availability of blood for road traffic accident victims.

According to her, the major challenge delaying the project  was funding.

Ms Sfarijlani thanked the DVLA for the gesture, and called on other corporate bodies to support the project.

The Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Mr Rudolph Beckley, who made the presentation, said the donation was in fulfilment of DVLA’s promise to the hospital, following a request from the latter.

He explained that the DVLA thought it necessary to support the hospital’s blood bank project, as the availability of the facility would enhance health delivery at the hospital.

In particular, Mr Beckley said a blood bank would facilitate health delivery without obstructions and delays, stressing that victims of road accidents would stay alive.
