A portion of the road destroyed by the rain

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways to ensure that portions of the Ofankor-Achimota road that are prone to flooding are repaired.

Ever since the construction of the highway started four years ago, Kaiser Valley, an area near Ofankor, close to the Ofankor-Achimota Highway, had become prone to flooding.

Even though the road, which was constructed by the China Railway Company has been completed and handed over to the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), some drains along it remain blocked, leading to flooding and destruction to property in the nearby communities whenever it rained heavily.

One of the affected residents, Mr Quarcoo Tetteh, the proprietor of Auto Tyre Centre, said he received a permit from the local authority in 1982 to develop his plot of land into a recreational facility with a fish pond, but because of the situation, he was finding it difficult to push ahead with his plans.

Challenges

He said he had reported the flood situation to the authorities on several occasions but nothing concrete had been done.
He claimed that measures put in by the China Railway Company aimed at remedying the situation had rather worsened it. What was worse, he said, was that calls on the GHA had so far yielded no response.
