Upper East Police arrest 3 for human trafficking, baby sale

Three persons have been arrested by the Upper East Regional Police Command for allegedly trafficking young women from Nigeria into Ghana and forcing them into prostitution in the mining community of Gbane in the Talensi District.

The suspects identified by the police as Peace Agbede, Favour Sunday Udo and Faith Levi, were also alleged to have attempted to sell a newborn baby of one of the trafficked victims.

They are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before the court.

A statement released by the Upper East Police Command yesterday said the police also rescued four female victims, aged between 18 and 20 years, during the operation.

According to the statement, preliminary investigations by the police revealed that one of the suspects, Peace Agbede, allegedly lured one of the victims from Nigeria with the promise of helping her pursue a career in Ghana's movie industry because of her beauty.

It said the victim reportedly accepted the offer and travelled to Ghana with the hope of building an acting career.

False promise

The statement, however, said that upon arrival, the suspect allegedly failed to honour the promise and instead took the victim to the mining town of Gbane, in the Upper East Region, where she was allegedly forced into prostitution.
It said the victim was required to pay GH¢400 daily to her alleged trafficker, who acted as her "Madam."

The statement said police investigations further revealed that the victim got pregnant through prostitution and gave birth on June 26, 2026.

Baby sale

It said days after the delivery, Peace Agbede, together with her alleged accomplice, Favour Sunday Udo, visited the victim and attempted to persuade her to sell her newborn baby.
According to the police, the suspects allegedly informed the victim that an interested buyer was prepared to pay GH¢20,000 for the child.

The statement said the alleged transaction did not materialise until the police intervened.

A search conducted in the room of Peace Agbede, according to the statement, led to the retrieval of six sales record books bearing the names "Esther", "Mary", "Bright" and "Silver", as well as 265 unused condoms, which the police believed could aid ongoing investigations.

The statement said the four rescued victims were receiving the necessary support while investigations continue.
