The Bono East Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with a highway robbery on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway and recovered GH¢300,000 allegedly stolen during the attack.
The suspects were arrested following a swift police operation after officers on duty at the Portor Police Barrier received information that a robbery was taking place a short distance from the barrier.
A statement issued by the Regional Police Headquarters in Techiman said the incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on July 19, 2026, when personnel at the Portor Police Barrier, under the Kintampo Police Division, received intelligence that armed robbers were attacking travellers on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway.
The statement said a police team immediately moved to the scene. On seeing the officers, about four suspects fled into a nearby bush, while Abdul Sadat Ali, 24, the driver of a Toyota Voxy with registration number AS 1541-25, was arrested at the scene.
According to the police, information gathered during the initial interrogation of Abdul Sadat Ali led to the arrest of Samad Issahaka, 24, the driver of a Kia Rhino truck with registration number AS 7337-23, who was allegedly linked to the robbery.
Further investigations, the police said, revealed that Yahaya Seidu, 35, owner of the Kia Rhino truck, had instructed his driver, Samad Issahaka, to transport him to Buipe to purchase cattle.
The police alleged that Samad Issahaka, knowing his employer was carrying a large amount of money, conspired with five other suspects to rob him.
The suspects, armed with a toy pistol, allegedly followed the Kia Rhino after it passed the Portor Police Barrier before attacking the occupants and making away with GH¢300,000.
The statement said personnel from the Police Counter Terrorism Unit, supported by the local Police Patrol Team, pursued the fleeing suspects into the bush and arrested four more suspects.
They were identified as Abdul Rahman Mashud, 21, Asigri Avoka, 25, Awini Stephen, 19, and Faisal Salifu, 26.
A search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of the entire GH¢300,000 allegedly stolen during the robbery.
The police said the suspects admitted during interrogation that they had followed the Kia Rhino from Offinso in the Ashanti Region before allegedly carrying out the robbery at Portor after receiving information from Samad Issahaka.
All six suspects are in police custody assisting with investigations.
The Bono East Regional Police Command commended officers at the Portor Police Barrier and personnel of the Police Counter Terrorism Unit for their prompt response, which led to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the stolen money.
The statement, signed by the Bono East Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Shaibu A. Sadique-Osei, said the command would continue to intensify operations to protect lives and property across the region.
