Remain vigilant to be effective emergency responders — Christian Li
Vivo Energy Ghana, the exclusive distributor and marketer of Shell-branded fuel and lubricants, has reaffirmed its commitment to workplace safety and urged employees, contractors and industry partners to remain vigilant and prepared to respond effectively to emergencies in high-risk operational environments.
The Managing Director (MD) of Vivo Energy Ghana, Christian Li, who made the call at the company’s observance of this year’s safety day, said his outfit had achieved more than 5,600 “Goal Zero days” without a workplace injury.
He described the feat as a reflection of a strong safety culture and sustained commitment to operational excellence and added that safety remained central to the company’s operations and long-term success.
Mr Li, who was speaking at this year’s safety day and awards ceremony of the company in Accra yesterday, therefore called for continued discipline and awareness across all levels of the organisation.
The event, which highlighted the importance of emergency preparedness, effective response systems and continuous safety training in preventing incidents from escalating into major disasters, was on the theme: “Prepare to respond.”
“While we continue to strengthen our preventive measures, we must also be adequately prepared to respond swiftly and effectively when emergencies arise,” Mr Li stated and explained that the company operated in a high-risk environment where risks such as fire, explosions and operational failures demanded constant vigilance and strict adherence to safety procedures.
He said Vivo Energy Ghana continued to invest in safety training, risk assessment systems, emergency response protocols and operational controls, including fire suppression systems and emergency shut-off mechanisms and attributed the company’s safety performance not only to employees, but also to contractors, transporters, retailers and industry partners who, he said, played a critical role in maintaining safety standards across the value chain.
Vigilance
Mr Li also urged the staff of the company to remain vigilant and uphold operational standards, while urging contractors to strictly comply with safety protocols.

He said employees must speak up whenever they identify potential risks, pointing out that proactive intervention was key to preventing incidents.
“The future of safety will not be defined by luck, but by preparation. Safety is a deliberate discipline and a collective responsibility,” Mr Li stressed.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, urged companies to deepen collaboration with regulatory bodies and continuously improve on their safety systems to reduce environmental risks and enhance emergency preparedness across the sector.
Professor Klutse also called on industry players in the oil and gas sector to strengthen environmental compliance and safety oversight as part of broader efforts to prevent industrial incidents.
Some members of staff and units were recognised for their contribution towards promoting a strong safety culture in the company.
