MOBA president presents cash award to NSMQ winning team

The President of Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA), the alumni group of Mfantsipim School, Ebusuapanyin Moses Kwesi Baiden Jnr, has presented GH¢111,100 to the school’s National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) winning team.

The headmaster of the school and four coordinators of the NSMQ team were presented with GH¢50,000 for their guidance and commitment to the students success.

Each of the three contestants, who won the trophy, also received GH¢15,000, totalling GH¢45,000 to support their educational pursuits.

Additionally, 14 students who were part of the team and provided other auxiliary services, including research, received GH¢1,000 each, totalling GH¢14,000, while the drivers who chauffeured them around were offered GH¢700 each.

The presentation was made at the office of Margins ID Group, a company founded and chaired by Mr Baiden Jnr, in Accra.

Present were the National Executive Committee (NEC) members of MOBA and the victorious NSMQ team.

Mfantsipim School emerged champions of the 2024 NSMQ in a dramatic contest which saw them beat their closest contestants, St Augustine’s College, with a single point.

It is the third trophy the school has so far won in the competition, coming after their last victory a decade ago in 2014. They first won it in 1999.

For their prize, the school received gold medals and a cash of GH¢70,000.

Commendation

Mr Baiden Jnr congratulated the team and said their victory was received with excitement from the MOBA community worldwide, with some members voluntarily raising funds to support the school and the team.

He pledged their commitment to comprehensive support for the school to ensure more success.

“Historically, some funding was provided, but it is time for a more sustainable model to create an environment that fosters learning — not only for the quiz but also for cultivating talent in science and mathematics,” Mr Baiden Jnr said.

He said MOBA had made great strides in partnership with the school, adding that “it is clear we need a robust system that won’t fall apart due to lack of planning”.

Mr Baiden Jnr said that various committees, chaired by NEC members, were overseeing different aspects of support to the school, including the NSMQ.

Business plan

Going forward, Mr Baiden Jnr said that NEC had devised a strategic business plan and the NSMQ was part of their vision.

He said they were also building facilities for sports excellence, creating an endowment fund, digitising alumni networks, and strengthening relationships among MOBA, the school and the Methodist Church.

The three contestants had also been made brand ambassadors for the school’s 150th anniversary celebration, which will run until 2026.
