The items included 150 hospital bed mattresses, bags of rice, gallons of detergents, soaps, toiletries and loafs of bread.

The donation was preceded by a health walk by the members from the Presbyterian Boys’ School (PRESEC), Legon to the hospital where they presented the items.

The association is also considering adopting a ward in the hospital for assistance.

Annual charity

It was the second time the association was donating to the hospital as part of an annual charity the association undertakes to support the needy in the society.

The General Secretary of ASSOFIN, Mr Solomon Kotei, presented the items on behalf of the association and explained that members visited the hospital and were touched by the plight of the patients and decided to support with some of the basic needs it lacked.

He said even though the ICU was in the forefront of labour, “We are also mindful that we should also share with the needy.”

Dumping site

Mr Kotei called on the Ministries of Health, Water and Sanitation and the Ga East Municipal Assembly to immediately relocate a dumping site located near the hospital to prevent further worsening the health condition of patients in the hospital.

He was worried about the foul smell emanating from the site, stressing that it was adding more illnesses to the patients who were already sick.

Mr Kotei pledged that the ICU would take it up as its project to ensure that something was done about the refuse dumping site.

Response

A Psychiatrist at the hospital, Dr Leveana Gyimah, received the items on behalf of the hospital and expressed gratitude to the association for supporting the hospital with such critical items, which the facility was in dire need.

She appealed for more of such support to enable the hospital to meet the needs of its clients and those on admission.
