Police sensitise schoolchildren to road safety practices

The police in the Central Region have sensitised schoolchildren of the Onua Francis International School at Gomoa Buduburam and the Young Executive School (YES) at Kasoa to road safety practices.

The move is aimed at curbing road traffic accidents among children and also to help make them see the police as their friends.

At the event, organised by the school, the Deputy Central East Regional Police Commander, ACP Joseph Owusu-Bempah admonished schoolchildren to observe safe road crossing practices to avoid vehicular knockdowns.

Zones

He urged the schoolchildren to cross the road at marked areas and avoid running, which could lead to slipping in the process to be run over by a vehicle.

Moreover, he called on them to walk briskly when crossing the road and not to run.

“Sometimes, you see children running; no, you don’t have to do that.

Make sure that the car that is coming is at a distance so that you just walk quickly across to the other side,” he emphasised.

ACP Owusu-Bempah said children walking along the street should endeavour to face on-coming vehicles so that they could see those coming in their direction to take precautionary measures in the event of a vehicle veering off the road.

He said they always observed the most common rule of looking left, right and left again, before crossing and asked children to see the police as their friends.

Report

The Gomoa Buduburam District Police Commander, ASP Ernest Agbo, also called on the schoolchildren to report any form of sexual harassment to school authorities and the police for the necessary action to be taken against perpetrators.

He said children, especially girls, should not allow anybody to touch parts of their bodies, including their buttocks, breasts and genital areas.

“If anyone does that to you go and report the person.

Even if that person is a female, go and report.

Take good care of yourself and then learn hard,” he said.

Appeal

For his part, the Director of the Onua Francis International School and YES, Francis Essel-Okyeahene, appealed to the Police administration to organise similar educational programmes for all schools across the country to reduce accidents.

He said the programme had been quite educative and commended the police for undertaking such an exercise to sensitise schoolchildren to road safety issues.

He said that would go a long way to curb accidents in the country, adding that the authorities would continue to organise more such programmes to ensure the safety of children.
