Tennis: 4 Garrison beat Wa

The 4 Garrison Officers Mess Tennis Club from Kumasi thumped Wa Tennis Club 7-4 in a special tournament between the two sides in Wa last weekend.

The Wa Club triumphed 3-2 in the singles tournament, but succumbed 5-1 in the doubles event, as the visitors grabbed the overall prize in the two-day competition.

The tournament attracted top personalities such as former Deputy Attorney General, Mr Ambrose Dery, and the Upper West Regional police commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwasi Mensah Duku, both of the Wa Tennis Club, as well as national tennis star Francis Akpese of the Kumasi Club.

Indeed, Wa Tennis Club’s, Dominic Amevor, and Maurice Bayor, whose opponent Quayson Agyemang retired midway into their game, were among the dominant players as the tournament opened with the singles games, even though Henry Osei and Akpese had shown the potency of their side with similar dominant displays.

But the rest of it turned into a one-sided affair as the visitors recovered from the energy-sapping exchanges of the sunny morning to dominate the doubles in an emphatic manner as the competition resumed later on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

The president of 4 Garrison Officers Mess Tennis Club, Samuel Ampadu Kyei (aka Kyikyiss), described the event as very useful for socialisation, exercising and networking, and said they were looking forward to host the Wa Club later in the year in a return encounter.
