WAFA reclaimed the top spot of the Ghana Premier League after beating Kumasi Asante Kotoko 2-0 in their outstanding game at the Red Bull Arena at Sogakope yesterday.

Second half goals by Prince Obeng Ampem and Daniel Lomotey did not only hand WAFA the maximum points to overtake Aduana Stars, with 46 points, but also re-emphasised their home invincibility with their 11th home win this season.

The game began on a calm note as both sides tried to size up each other with a rather cautious approach, but in no time the WAFA lads settled down, possessing and pushing Steven Polack's charges, who were playing their first away game since they were involved in a tragic accident last month, to adopt a defensive game in order to contain the home side.

Indeed, the first half was uneventful as the game swung from one side to the other with WAFA dominating possession.

After recess, Kotoko opened up and began attacking, but that would be their bane as WAFA caught them on the break and responded with two quick goals.

Not many visiting teams survive the first half at Sogakope so preventing the home side from scoring may have given Kotoko a false sense of security as they threw caution to the wind with an attacking game in search of the opener. But it looked like a trap that allowed Kotoko to expend more energy while on the attack and were unable to quickly recover on WAFA's counter.

In a quick counter-attack from the hosts, Kotoko's defence looked disorganised and a shot at goal was quickly parried back into play by goalkeeper Felix Annan, but the ball bounced off Obeng Ampem and rolled into the net for the first goal in the 58th minute.

Eight minutes later, Kotoko tried to recover but forgot to keep their rear protected and again WAFA took advantage of their lax defending with Lomotey running deep on the left, and realising that the Kotoko goalie was off his line, the WAFA attacker unleashed a low grounder which comfortably found its way into the net for the second goal.

Kotoko tried to redeem at least a goal but the most realistic chance that fell to Prince Acquah in the penalty box was denied by the cross bar after he shot in front of an empty net.

From then on, it was WAFA who run the show and cut their visitors to size just as they had done to other visiting teams, to remain unbeaten at home.
