UCC wins 2016 GUSA games

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) emerged overall winners in the 2016 Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games which ended at the University of Education, Winneba last Friday.

The UCC won eight trophies from all the 11 disciplines they participated in and crowned the winners in the games which sportsmen and women from eight public universities in the country participated in.

The two-week games were held on the  theme:  ‘’Developing and sustaining Sporting Talents for Ghana’’ and the participating universities were the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Ghana, Legon, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST) and University of Cape Coast (UCC).

The rest were University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale, University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani (UENR) and the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa (UMaT).

The UCC won trophies in men’s soccer, badminton, basketball, table tennis, netball and volley ball. The UEW followed with seven trophies, winning in athletics, men’s soccer, handball, tennis and volley ball.

The University of Ghana won two trophies, while University of Professional Studies and the University of Energy and Natural Resources each won a trophy.

A special award was given to the UENR for being a new public university to participate in the games held biennially.

Addressing the closing ceremony, the President of GUSA, Professor Joseph Kwesi Ogah, commended the athletes for exhibiting their individual skills and talents.

He lauded the local organising committee for a hard work which culminated in the success of the games.

The Vice Chancellor of the UEW, Professor Mawutor Avoke, said the games had rekindled the spirit of friendship among the various universities and would further deepen the relationship.

Meanwhile, the 25th GUSA games would be held at the University for Professional Studies (UDS).
