Millennium Marathon returns September 3

After a two-year break, the annual Millennium Marathon will hit the streets of Accra once again with some of the continent’s best marathon runners competing for prizes.

At the launch yesterday at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, the organisers promised to make this year's event a showpiece competition as it is expected to attract athletes from across the country and outside the country.

The Director of event, Catherine Morton, revealed that the seventh Millennium Marathon on September 3 will be held in partnership with the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) to hunt talents capable of representing Ghana at international competitions.

“And this is to further establish our aim of being the pacesetters in marathon running in Ghana, to hunt and hone the skills of talents and make running a national pastime,” she stated.

“Our goal is to work together with the Ghana Athletics Association to achieve in the near future a world athletics labelled race marathon."

Gold Label rating

She added that the event had been certified by the country's athletics body as the first ever Gold Label Road race in Ghana and would provide athletes an opportunity to compete and win attractive prizes.

Participation is open to corporate bodies and individuals by registering on the event website.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the GAA, Bawah Fuseini, his outfit was excited to be part of this year’s Millennium Marathon and was willing to provide all the support to make it a success.

The GAA, he said, would take full control of the technical aspects of the competition to capture accurately all athletes' data to be recorded on the website of World Athletics, the sport's global body.

Also, he explained that the decision to rank the Millennium Marathon as a Gold Label was as a result of the impressive organisation, huge number of participation and the quality of athletes that participated in the programme over the past six events.
