Iñaki Williams made history for Athletic with his 515th appearance, but his night ended with an injury late on.
According to El Correo, the milestone was clouded by a late injury. He asked to come off on 80 minutes after discomfort in his left leg and limped off. Maroan Sannadi replaced him on 82.
Head coach Edin Terzic sought to ease concern. He said it was too soon to know if Williams could play this week at Levante and then Alavés at San Mamés on Saturday.
Terzic explained the forward took a blow to the foot and they would wait to see how it evolves overnight, though the player felt positive after the match. Around 20 or 30 minutes later Williams was already more comfortable.
The occasion carried extra weight for the 32-year-old, who surpassed Joseba Etxeberria to become fifth on Athletic’s all-time list with 515 official games.
The ranking is led by Iribar on 614, followed by De Marcos on 573, Muniain on 560 and Txetxu Rojo on 541. Williams needs 100 more to overhaul Iribar.
The milestone comes days after he announced his retirement from Ghana, allowing him to focus on Athletic.
