Golf: Road to Obotan tees-off at Samartex Club

Fifty professional golfers yesterday teed off at the Samartex Golf Course in the Western region for the chance to win a whooping GH₡100,000 prize money in the "Road to Obotan" series.

The four-day competition dubbed Mahogany Open is the first stop on a series of four tournaments under the "Road to Obotan" banner and was opened to all members of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of Ghana.

In the hunt for the prize money are celebrated Ghanaian professional golfers, namely; Vincent Torgah, Emos Korblah, Kojo Barnni and Maxwell Owusu Bonsu.

Organised by Samartex Timber and Plywood Company Limited together with Safari Group, the competition hopes to become the biggest professional golf tournament in West Africa.

The Managing Director of Samartex, Mr Richard Nsenkyire in an address at the launch of the competition explained that as a company, his outfit wants to project the sport of golf, give professional players more playing time, and develop young talents in the sport.

He explained that Road to Obotan Tournament would be characterized by four competitions which would be played at the Safari Valley Golf Club (Adukrom - Okere District) and Samartex Golf Club (Samreboi).

He said after the Mahogany Open which ends on Sunday, March 6, there would be the Cedrela Open which would be the second in the tournament series to the played at the Safari Valley in June, followed by the Odum Open to be played at Samartex in September and the Obotan Tournament which is the main event to be played in December at Safari Valley.

The Tournament Director of the Professional Golfers Association of Ghana, Mr Akwasi Prempeh, explained that the tournament would be based on a points system therefore the golfer with the highest points after the four tournaments, would be crowned the overall winner.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Amenfi West, Mr Lord Nana Tandoh commended the organisers for coming up with the event and urged them to continue doing their best for the community.
