Constituency Games will transform grassroots sports — NSA boss

The Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has described the planned Constituency Games as a historic intervention that would revolutionise grassroots sports development across the country.

Speaking at the Constituency Games consultative engagement and endorsement forum, Mr Ankrah said the initiative, which is expected to be rolled out nationwide, would provide a structured platform for talent identification and development at the community level.

“I think this is going to be the greatest input or intervention in Ghana’s sports cause that we’ve seen since independence,” he stated.

The NSA Director-General explained that the Constituency Games would cover every constituency and community in all 16 regions of Ghana, thereby creating unprecedented opportunities for young people to participate in organised sporting activities.

He noted that the initiative would help address the long-standing challenge of talent discovery which had largely been concentrated in major urban centres, leaving many gifted young athletes in rural communities unnoticed.

“Many talented young people across the country lack access to organised competitions and structured opportunities to develop their abilities. The Constituency Games will help bridge that gap by bringing sporting activities closer to the communities,” Mr Ankrah said.

He expressed optimism that the programme would significantly contribute to the development of Ghana’s national teams by widening the pool from which talent can be identified and nurtured.

The NSA boss also appealed to media practitioners to embrace the initiative and support its promotion across the country.

“It’s for you, my dear media colleagues. Let’s hold it, let’s embrace it, and let’s push it to the next level,” he urged.

Mr Ampofo Ankrah stressed that sustained media coverage would be crucial in generating public interest, encouraging community participation, and highlighting emerging talents from various constituencies.
