Banku, Powers predict early kos

Arguably two of Ghana's rebranded boxers, Brimah Kamoko, and his long-time pal, Ayitey Powers, have each predicted a knockout in their 'repeat or revenge' fight on Boxing Day at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

The two boxers brought Kumasi alive last Friday in a prematch conference to sell the fight supported by bus loads of fans from Bukom and Korle Gonno in Accra.

Characteristically, music, dance, drama and insults, some unprintable, especially from the camp of Kamoko, aka Banku, threw the jam-packed auditorium off gear momentarily before the programme took off.

Powers, sporting his usual ginger hair, said in order not to repeat his mistakes in their first clash at the Accra Stadium in May last year, he had resolved to end the fight by the eighth round to grab the GH¢100,000, the Range Rover vehicle and a ticket for a holiday in South Africa.

But in a quick rebuttal, Banku, who remains unbeaten in 48 fights, said “tell Ayitey that round five comes before round eight,” apperantly predicting to end the fight in the fifth round.

Powers, in a rather calm composure, said despite the acrimony heralding the fight, they still remain the best of friends, adding “if God knows that I have trained harder and deserve to win so be it, and vice versa.”

His soothing words touched Banku, who had been on the rampage verbally attacking everybody, including the promoters, Landmark Productions.

“From today I urge all my fans to stop attacking Ayitey because we still remain the best of friends. But I know the media understand this. It is done everywhere, even in America, just to sell the fight,” Banku said.

Saturday's fight, which will be thriving on the wings of entertainment, is being sponsored by Joy Industries, producers of Joy Dadi bitters, and supported by Black Avenue Sports.

Shatta Wale, who promised at the press conference to play a new song in honour of the winner, together with Dr Black, Kwaw Kese, Sarkodie, and Efya, are among a number artistes billed to spice the night.

There will be seven undercards on the night, while ticket prices which range from GH¢10 to GH¢100 are on sale.
